The Romance languages are a branch of the Indo-European language family that comprises all the languages that descend from Latin, the language of the Roman. The most spoken Romance languages are Spanish, Portuguese, French, Italian and Romanian.
| Spanish This is one of the official languages of Spain, most Latin American countries and Equatorial Guinea. In total, 21 nations use Spanish as their primary language and it is also one of six official languages of the United Nations. Spanish is spoken by over 400 million people natively, making it the most spoken Romance language. | Portuguese During the 15th and 16th centuries Portugal established a colonial and commercial empire. At that time, many Creole languages based on Portuguese also appeared around the world, especially in Africa, Asia and the Caribbean. Unlike most other Romance languages, Italian has retained the contrast between short and long consonants which existed in Latin. Of the Romance languages, Italian is considered to be one of the closest resembling latin in terms of vocabulary. |
